Frequently Asked Questions

Courses FAQ

Florida law requires anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, to successfully complete an approved boating education course and obtain a Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card before operating a motorboat. Our America’s Boating Course is Florida state and NASBLA approved and fulfills this requirement.

Complete our America’s Boating Course (available online or in person) and pass the final exam. Upon completion, you will receive your Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card, which is recognized by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Upcoming America’s Boating Course classes are scheduled for April 4 and May 2, 2026. Both courses are available in our Belcher Commons Suite 201 classroom. Please note that course purchases are non refundable. Contact our education officer at education@abclubclearwater.org or (727) 441-8775 for registration and details.

We offer three course levels: America’s Boating Course (foundational boating safety), Boat Handling (advanced seamanship and maneuvering), and Marine Navigation (coastal and inland navigation using charts and marine electronics). These courses help deepen your knowledge and skills for safe and enjoyable boating experiences on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

No, anyone can enroll in our courses whether you are a member or not. However, members enjoy special pricing and exclusive access to advanced course offerings and member only events.

Yes, absolutely. Many of our members join before purchasing a boat to learn and connect with the community. Taking courses before buying a boat is an excellent way to make an informed purchase decision.

Safety Checks FAQ

No, a vessel safety check is completely voluntary. However, it is highly recommended as a free way to ensure your boat and equipment meet federal and state safety standards. A passing check is recognized nationwide and may result in insurance discounts.

Vessel Safety Checks are free of charge and conducted by our certified Vessel Examiners. Contact us by email or phone to request an inspection. Call (727) 355-1410 or email to schedule an appointment at your dock or marina. The check helps achieve voluntary compliance with federal and state recreational boating safety laws and raises awareness about safety and environmental issues.
